This brief explores how efficient private sector-led contract poultry farming—where a farmer produces exclusively for one contractor—can boost the livelihoods of small-scale Indian farmers and support sustainable rural development.

Noting the rapid growth of India’s poultry sector, the brief looks at how contract farmers benefit from economies of scale, shorter poultry farming cycles, and higher labor and capital productivity. Drawing on data from farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, it analyzes the impact of the pandemic, looks at the barriers to working with a major producer, and shows how contract farming can reduce a poultry farmer’s risk exposure.
