This innovation project brief shows how the roll out of reliable high voltage electricity supplies to rural parts of India’s Maharashtra state is helping boost agricultural production, tackle poverty, and reduce emissions.

It explains how previous low voltage systems led to frequent power outages and commercial losses. It describes how irrigation and agricultural production were impeded and many people were forced to rely on expensive diesel generators. As a result of the ADB-backed program that also trained Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company staff, farmers are now improving yields, diversifying crops, and increasing opportunities for their families.
