Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy

The Maldives is an archipelago composed of 1,192 small islands, with 187 inhabited, 79 leased for agricultural and/or industrial purposes, and 293 designated for tourism development . The country has a population of 515,122 people and heavily relies on tourism, contributing 26% to its GDP . Fossil fuel imports, mainly diesel fuel and LPG, meet the energy demands, accounting for about 8% to 10% of the country's GDP. The power sector consists of two utility companies operating multiple powerhouses. Diesel generation capacity of 320 MW is installed on inhabited islands, with 162 MW in the Greater Male' region and 210 MW on resort islands. Renewable energy capacity, primarily from solar PV systems, is around 53 MW, but power generation costs are high due to oversized systems and lack of power interconnection between islands.
