Description | |||||
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy | The Asia and Pacific region, with most of the world's population and economic growth, is disproportionately affected by climate-induced disasters, leading to an annual loss of $675 billion and claiming 43,000 lives on average due to storms, floods, and landslides. Recent disasters, such as floods in Pakistan, typhoons in the Philippines, and heatwaves in India, have exacerbated the situation. As the region is responsible for half of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, it is highly vulnerable to climate change's adverse effects. Air temperatures are rising at a faster rate in this region, which threatens agricultural productivity, and rising sea levels put the 2.4 billion people living in low-lying areas at risk by mid-century. Even a slight increase in global temperature between 1.5C and 2.0C can have severe consequences for the Asia and Pacific region. It is therefore, critical to take immediate and concerted action to mitigate the effects of climate change in this region and beyond. Evidence that such disasters will increase in frequency, intensity, and severity is growing. Accelerating efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ramping up adaptation and mitigation measures to address the impacts of climate change is crucial for the international community. The report from the Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that even under low emission scenarios, the world will face severe climate risks before the end of the century. Therefore, it is imperative to develop ambitious mitigation and adaptation plans to effectively manage risks associated with climate change. |
